In 2023, around 63% of people browsing the internet preferred Chrome as their desktop browser, 19% of people preferred Safari, with Edge, Firefox and Opera sharing approximately 18%.

Chrome peaked at almost 50% of the market share in late 2023, with Safari just below 35%. Android improved to finish with almost 12% of the tablet browser market share.

Closer to home the overall browser market share in Australia saw Chrome peak and trough around the 50% mark, with Safari mimicking the inverse of Chrome’s path in the mid-30% range. Curiously, Edge, Firefox and Opera also followed that same trajectory at the lower market share.

Even after the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook dominated social media engagement, fluctuating in the mid-60% market share throughout 2023. None of the other platforms peaked above 15%.

Mobile is still the preferred device with over 53% of the market share, increasing from 51% in 2020. Desktop is hovering around 45%, and Tablet usage remains constant at 1.7% for October 2023.

CMS Usage Distribution 2023
